About the lake
Buffalo Sands Community
Nestled in central Alberta, Buffalo Sands Community is a prairie gem — calm, clear water surrounded by open skies and the quiet beauty of the Alberta countryside. The lake spans approximately 93.5 km² and reaches depths of up to 2.8 metres, making it ideal for both recreation and fishing year-round.
The community association maintains the shared amenities and access areas to ensure everyone — residents, guests, and visitors — can enjoy the lake responsibly.

Sandy Beach & Swimming
Buffalo Sands boasts a gently sloping sandy beach ideal for swimming, wading, and relaxing. The designated swim area is marked with buoys and is unsupervised — swim at your own risk.

Fishing
Buffalo Sands Community is well-stocked with walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch. A valid Alberta fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older.

Recreation & Trails
Explore the natural surroundings on foot or by bike. The county maintains informal trails around the lake perimeter and open green space for recreation.

Ice-off fishing, migratory birds, wildflowers along the shoreline.
July – August

Ice fishing, snowshoeing, skating when conditions allow.
Keeping it great for everyone
Lake & Community Rules
These guidelines help protect the lake environment and ensure all residents and guests can enjoy Buffalo Sands safely and respectfully. Full bylaws are available through the Community Info page.
Quiet hours are 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM daily
No motorized watercraft in the designated swim area
All anglers 16+ must carry a valid Alberta fishing licence
Seasonal docks are installed May long weekend and removed September long weekend
No cutting of trees or vegetation on community land
Fires permitted in designated fire pits only — check fire bans
Beach Access
The beach and swim area are open daily from dawn to dusk. No overnight camping on the beach. Quiet hours apply after 11:00 PM.

Fire Bans
Always check current Alberta fire ban status before lighting any fire. Fires are permitted in designated pits only. Visit alberta.ca/firebans for current conditions.
